I’ve lived in poverty all my life, been homeless for a year now (because I did the right thing when my kid was abused, but society only punishes those who leave their abusers), have watched my labor go uncompensated despite working hundreds of times harder and smarter (multiplied by my intersecting oppressions).
They snidely side eye people in poverty, thinking only academia stamped by the Lily-whitest of hands counts as “expert”. They learn our lives secondhand, and it fits them just as badly as the hand-me-downs we make do with.
They dare call us useless, addicted cowards without realizing how their wealth bears down upon the foundation we built and hold up with our very lives. They have the nerve to assume they earned their way when they have no integrity to speak of.
Their richness is as gilded as the cheap layer covering the fake jewelry that breaks out my skin, but that was the only affordable kind.
They have no idea, and that’s a damn shame.
