America did exactly what it’s been programmed to do from day one. It lived up to its promise. It functioned precisely as defined.
You see, this country was never made for me. It is not made for any person who’s Black, indigenous, autistic, noetisexual, pansexual, intersex, genderqueer, poor, Irish, assigned/read as female, left-handed, aromantic, nonreligious, invisibly disabled with PCOS and endometriosis and fibromyalgia and cPTSD and anxiety and depression, who writes trauma-informed queer Cuil fiction and values truth and transparency and integrity.
This is a white country, founded on white values and white supremacy, and built on the genocide, brutalization, dehumanization, and experiments done on people with each and every one of my aspects.
White people, you are only just now waking up to the realization that your world has been created within an abuse culture.
A racist rapist with all the privilege bestowed upon him has been elected, because that is the heart of an abuse culture rooted in white supremacy and misogynoir.
I say specifically misogynoir because white people of any gender are all complicit in and directly benefit from the system, whether or not you were born here, whether or not you yourself are racist and misogynoir or not!
Every single ism that’s problematic is rooted in the original oppression of Black people, the original everything (Lilith, anyone?). Only by denying our varied and diverse history and by obscuring our contributions has the world found a way to oppress everyone else in turn.
Your queer rights, your women’s rights, your disability and worker’s rights — and everything else — only became an issue and only exist because of Black people.
We are your roots. We are your ancestors. We created everything you hold dear and value.
And you shut us out so that the rich can get richer. You created a nation dedicated to white supremacy and then tried to cover your tracks with amendments and platitudes.
You created a false hierarchy, dividing people into layers and classifying us into smaller and smaller minorities, then kept telling us to wait our turns with patience and grace while you spoke over us, while you erased us, while you Columbused us.
Trump is not some shocking mistake. He is the inevitable culmination of processes and systems set in place to actively and purposely prevent restoration, reparations, and even acknowledgment for Black people.
The root of all oppression is Black oppression.
Congratulations; the system worked.
Now…are you ready to do better? Are you ready to shut up and listen? Are you ready to provide resources and reparations to Black people so that we can dig you out of your mess?
Let me know. Cuz we’re ready.
